Many of our clients are quick to invest in one of the more high-tech security solutions we provide, such as a video system or an access control system, without first ensuring that they have the proper wooden door lock for their doors and that they are always used. Here are some options to consider when selecting door locks for your home.
We’ve tried both traditional and intelligent deadbolts using a single cylinder, and they can be unlocked with a key (or PIN code) on the outside or turned with a turn of thumb on the inside. These high-security locks are equipped with various safeguards, including reinforced cylinders and special pin arrangements. Locks rated as Grade 1 are the most secure, while locks rated as Grade 3 are the easiest to pick. While ratings are often included in product packaging, you may need to visit the manufacturer’s website to learn more about a lock’s rating.
A Medeco-level high-security lock, or a smart lock, might appear pricey. The cost of a lock may seem insignificant compared to the possibility of a break-in. Still, the amount that needs to be deducted on your insurance policy of your homeowner is likely to be more than the lock’s value. Installing a lock might also get you a discount on your home insurance.
The cost of a smart lock might put you off, but you should weigh that against the benefits you’ll receive. A smart lock can be a lifesaver if you frequently forget to lock your door or need to let cleaners or contractors in when you’re not there. Mobile app-controlled smart locks with remote locking and unlocking capabilities eliminate these issues.
Please be aware that gaining access from a distance typically necessitates purchasing and installing a WiFi bridge. Another option is an electronic lock, which is used in place of a smart lock if you want to save money for WiFi connectivity.
The door may fail before the lock does if it is too weak. Always use a metal box strike with your new lock and the screws that came with it. Your current striking plate is upgraded with new screws of the same size. A similar number of 3-inch screws is used to fasten the hinges.
However, it would help if you think twice before spending money on a double-sided lock, as many communities view them as a fire danger because you need a key to open the door from the inside. However, if put on a door next to glass sidelines, they can provide peace of mind by making it impossible for an intruder to shatter the glass and reach inside to turn the thumb turn.
Most of the deadbolt locks evaluated by Consumer Reports need to provide the desired level of security. That includes traditional deadbolts, electronic keypad locks, and smartphone/smart speaker-operated “smart locks.”
